Our Garden Center is committed to the Organic Approach to Gardening. This past year we have used many of the organic products in our greenhouses growing plants organically. Our emphasis is to get you to grow plants organically and to come up with organic solutions if you run into trouble. Due to our great success we can help you achieve the same. A large part of our Garden Center is devoted to organic products which will help you grow stronger and healthier plants. Sprainbrook Nursery features a wide selection of Garden Supplies: Animal repellants from Bobbex - we have them all. Birdhouses and bird feeders - a nice selection always in stock. Baskets - a large number and variety are always ready to hold your plants. Books - we carry those books that will benefit you the most in your gardening needs. Containers and window boxes - we have a huge selection of containers, both domestic and imports, all sizes and shapes, clay, wood, fiberglass, cement, molded plastics and synthetic combinations, many are hand made or hand painted. Wind chimes - great pieces and great sounds. Fertilizers - we carry a complete selection for indoor plants, both liquid and granular and we will glad to make recommendations based on your needs. Garden seeds - we carry seed lines that include the unusual as well as the organic seeds for flowers and vegetables from Burpee and Seeds of Change. Garden tools - at a competitive price we carry only the highest quality garden tools for anything less will not stand up to Westchester's heavy clay soil, and a good garden tool is always a good investment. Gloves - we have increased our selection to handle any of your gardening chores. Insect, disease, and plant problems - available is a complete selection of organic controls, and spray equipment. Being growers our diagnostic abilities are quite good and we are glad to help you find solutions and set you up with procedures to follow. Irrigation: Drip irrigation - everything needed to install your own system. Underground sprinkler systems, replacement parts and complete systems. Plant starter products - Jiffy pots, seed starter mixes, perlite, vermiculite, spagnum moss, charcoal, rooting hormone, silica gel, heating cables, orchid mix and more. Plant supports and plant hooks - stakes come in bamboo, wood or plastic covered metal. We have peony rings, metal cages and netting supports. Also available are hooks, hangers and extensions. Pruners - we carry a full line of Fiskars and select Felcos. Statues, bird baths, & garden ornaments - unusual items to beautify the garden have been selected. Trellis and arbors - along with those of wood, metal and plastic, we have hand made ones that are works of art. Water gardening: Pond liners, plants, waterfalls, fountain heads, pumps and everything you could possibly need to be part of the water gardening revolution. Watering accessories - our philosophy is top of the line products at competitive prices: Hoses, soaker hoses, watering wands and nozzles, hose repair items, sprinklers, timers, watering cans, hose reels, books on organic gardening and much more. A good spreader is indispensable for applying fertilizer correctly. A spreader helps to avoid missing areas of the lawn and helps prevent burning from applying excessive amounts.
Mulching is the most important gardening practice to ensure healthy plants. Mulches conserve moisture by protecting the soil from the direct rays of the sun and moving air. This greatly reduces water evaporation. In combination with a pre-emergence herbicide such as Preen, they almost completely eliminate weeds. Weeds compete for moisture and nutrients. Mulches keep the soil cool in summer and in the winter they prevent heaving of plants from alternate freezes and thaws. They keep the soil porous and allow better water penetration. The reduction of water run-off gives a deeper root soaking to plants and reduces the chance of erosion. There are many good mulches available. Your choice of mulch is less important than actually applying it and applying it heavily. Mulch all your plants. Not only will they grow better but your garden will look neater and cleaner.
