Floating Aquatic Plants The floating aquatic plants are tropical plants. Floating plants are very useful in the garden pool. The extensive root system serves as a spawning pad and provides a place for fish to hide. They are extreemly useful in helping to maintain a balanced pool. The floating foliage provides shade cover which helps stabilize water temperature. The root system helps provide oxygen. In addition the plants compete with algae for nutrients in the water thus starving algae. 
Eichorinia crassipes Bulbous green floating plant with lilac flowers, grows in part shade or shade. Price $4.95 
Floating Leaf Aquatics Floating leaf aquatics are plants with foliage that floats on the water surface. They are great contrast plants to the larger foliage of water lily. In addition, the flowering plants produce a proliferation of small dainty flowers.

Hardy Water Lilies (Nymphaea) Hardy water lilies are often responsible for a person becoming interested in water gardening. The floating foliage, with colorful flowers creates a visual image unlike any other in the garden. Hardy water lilies are perennial. The pad reflects heat during the day and holds heat in at night thus stabilizing temperature and assisting in algae control. In order to environmentally balance a pool, 40-60 percent of the water surface should be covered with floating foliage.

Oxygenated Plants Submerged plants are essential to maintain a proper balance in the pool. They add oxygen to the water and serve as a filter by absorbing dissolved nutrients and competing with algae. Oxygenated plants are essential for pools with fish. Not only do they help establish a natural balance in the pool, they also serve as a food source, spawning mats, and a hiding place for baby fish.
