When I was at Cornell, we didn't learn about Ornamental Grasses. They just didn't exist as a studied ornamental plant. Then some great landscape architects realized the extreme beauty of these plants. They created some exceptional grass gardens such as the one at Pepsico in Purchase, New York. We then started integrating them with other plants and developed beautiful settings. As the grasses became popular, the varieties available increased. Sprainbrook has devoted a complete section to grasses. We have grouped them into three categories low, medium and tall. Low grasses are used mainly in rock gardens, while medium or tall grasses are used in landscape settings. There are grasses that do well in sun or light shade, well drained or moist soil. They are low maintenance and drought tolerant. Their beautiful plumes swaying in the breeze add tremendously to the beauty and interest of your garden.
